Internet & wifi
Wifi and internet is widely available in Malaysia, both on the peninsula and Malaysian Borneo, and almost all restaurants and hotels offer free wifi.
It is easy to get internet on your cell phone, as many companies issue special ‘tourist’ sim cards, with prices starting from $7 US, depending on the package you choose. Sim cards can be purchased at any mobile phone provider in towns, at airports or at 2N Stop, Happy Mart, KK Super Mart and Orange Mart. Getting Sim cards is an easy and straight forward process, and staff will set up everything for you. You will need your passport to register. Good companies to use are Maxis, Celcom, Digi Telecommunication and U Mobile.
Getting around
Malaysia offers an excellent transportation system that is both affordable and convenient. There are various modes of transportation to move around the country, including an efficient long distance bus system and railroad network. For longer distances, visitors should consider traveling by air, as Malaysia is home to several low-budget airlines offering good deals and frequent connections.
To get from KLIA international airport to Kuala Lumpur, visitors can either take the KLIA Express high speed rail, public busses or taxis.
For visitors arriving at KLIA who do not intend to go to Kuala Lumpur, there are many direct bus connections leaving from the terminal. Destinations include Georgetown, Ipoh, Johor Bharu, Melaka and many more.

Money
Credit card payments can be done everywhere in Malaysia, be it at restaurants, public transport or shops. However, cash payments are still common. Malaysia’s currency is the Malaysian Ringgit, also known as RM.
Safety
Malaysia is a very safe place in general for tourists and reports about crimes towards visitors are very low. However, some precaution and common sense is advised. As everywhere, single woman should be cautions at night and avoid dark streets and isolated places in both cities and on the islands.
One of the main annoyances for tourists are taxis, especially in Kuala Lumpur, as many drivers try to overcharge clients. One scam is to take a significantly longer route deliberately if the taxi meter is switched on. It is therefore recommended to use Grab to avoid this.
Adhere to the rules and in particular stay out of any drug related issues, as this will automatically mean several years in prison or worse.
Medical & Healthcare
Malaysia has excellent healthcare facilities and services. Public hospitals and private clinics are available in every state and small towns. The same accounts for dental care.
It is recommended to obtain a travel health insurance before going to Malaysia.
Visas & immigration
Most nationalities do not require visas for visiting Malaysia. Foreign nationals who require a visa to enter Malaysia must apply and obtain it in advance at any Malaysian Representative Office abroad before entering the country. Passports and travel documents must be valid for more than six months beyond the intended visiting period.
In order to enter Malaysia, visitors also need to show proof of a double Covid-19 vaccination, as well as a negative PCR Test not older than 72 hours when entering. Please note that requirements might change overnight, and it is recommended to visit the official immigration website for updates before travelling to Malaysia.
